This ship required many months of intricate endeavor to put together. It’s made of 114 individually cut leather pieces. Some soaked, dyed, molded than dried, others required additional steps such as the details for wood planks. This project took 14 weeks to complete.

The original Santiago was built in the early 1500 and named after the Patron Saint of Spain, and of the military order where Magellan belonged. It weighed 60 tons and cost 187,500 maravedis. On May 3, 1520, captained by João Serrão while on a scouting mission, Santiago ran aground on land now known as South America.
